Curriculum: Intent, Implementation and Impact

EYFS
Intent To develop skills to be able to express their feelings and understand the feelings of others in the EYFS prime area of PSED. To build relationships that are constructive and beneficial.To be able to make healthy choices about food, personal hygiene (e.g. washing hands) and being safe. Work and play cooperatively and take turns with othersShow resilience and perseverance in the face of challenge.
Implementation Frequent and varied opportunities to build and apply understanding of how to express feelings, relationships and healthy choices. Role play is used to develop an understanding of what beneficial relationships, cooperative play and healthy choices are. Extensive opportunities are provided for pupils to develop their relationship, social and emotional skills.
Impact Pupils develop skills which help them to build beneficial and healthy relationships.Pupils will have ways to express their feelings and emotions and be able to self-regulate. Pupils will be able to communicate about their bodies, personal needs and manage self.
Pre-Formal
Intent To ensure each pupil has access to a bespoke RHSE curriculum closely matched to their EHCP outcomes and IEP targets.To encounter and develop skills to support with developing resilient mental, personal and physical health.To support pupils to develop the necessary skills so that they can maintain and manage emotions and healthy relationships with people.
Implementation A highly adapted, multi-sensory and skills-based approach. Repeated learning experiences to enable pupils to embed an understanding of emotions, feelings and relationships.Role play and experiences in the wider community to support the learning from the classroom.The engagement profile of pupils is used to increase engagement in RHSE learning, through planned purposeful role play and sensory experiences.
Impact Pupils demonstrate increasing engagement and participation in an increased breadth of RHSE activities.Pupils can show a greater understanding of positive relationships, awareness of personal needs and managing self within the class and wider school community.Pupils can apply the knowledge and skills developed to everyday situations, in preparation for life beyond school.
Semi-Formal
Intent To become confident in understanding a range of emotions and the importance of both mental and physical health. To develop a range of skills to help them safeguard themselves from physical and mental threats at school, home and online.To develop functional knowledge of personal health, fitness and how to prevent ill-health and what to do if they are ill.To show an understanding of their own bodies and changes to their body because of puberty. To demonstrate a clear understanding of sexual relationships and how to give or gain consent as part of these relationships.
Implementation A skills-based approach that is in line with the National Curriculum.A progressive learning experience is provided with an expectation that pupils will move from scenario and role play to demonstrating the skills in behaviour and relationships in class, school and the wider community.Breadth and balance in RHSE are provided through a range of practical, investigative, oral and real-life experiences.
Impact Pupils acquire an emotional toolkit to support them in a range of social situations both in school, in the community and online. Pupils gain use knowledge and skills to confidently pursue friendships, relationships and transitions to their next steps in the wider community. Pupils acquire resilience skills to be advocates for their personal, physical and mental health in their lives.
