Curriculum: Intent, Implementation and Impact

EYFS
Intent To provide an ambitious, broad, balanced and adapted English curriculum and texts, in line with the Early Years Framework.To teach early reading through a systematic, synthetic phonics programme.To develop their phonological awareness, so they can: spot and suggest rhymes, count or clap syllables in words and recognise words with the same initial sound. To develop self esteem and literacy skills at all levels using personalised modes of communication and an Augmentative and Alternative Communication environment.To experience a language- rich environment in school.  
Implementation Pupils within this area of school follow the seven key areas including; Communication and Language, and Literacy.Pupils will begin their Phonics learning through the Twinkl Phonics scheme. Pupils will be exposed to age-appropriate texts and key words across the curriculum using the Word Aware approach. Pupils will start to mark make in their first steps to writing, using personalised fine motor and Write Dance activities.
Impact Pupils will have developed early reading skills. Pupils are beginning to demonstrate reading for pleasure.Pupils are starting to acquire functional language skills. Pupils are developing their early writing skills.
Pre-Formal
Intent To continue to develop pupils’ early literacy skills with a bespoke, ambitious curriculum closely linked to their EHCP and IEP targets. To develop early reading and writing skills in ways that are appropriate and meaningful in relation to a pupil’s level of development.To support pupils to develop the necessary skills so that they can access subject specific learning (Semi-formal Pathway).To develop self-esteem and literacy skills at all levels using personalised modes of communication and an Augmentative and Alternative Communication environment.To listen attentively and respond to what they hear. To learn and use new vocabulary.To develop their understanding of sentence structure and be able to form simple sentences using their preferred mode of communication.
Implementation Reading is prioritised across the school and every child and young person spends time exploring appropriate reading materials.  A highly adapted, multi-sensory and skills-based approach to learning using story massage, on body stories, sensory stories, write dance and word aware.Repeated learning experiences to enable pupils to embed and generalise early reading and writing skills. Understanding the engagement profile of pupils is used to increase engagement in Literacy, through planned purposeful play and sensory experiences.
Impact Pupils demonstrate increasing engagement and participation in an increased breadth of early reading, writing and phonics activities.Pupils are able to complete Literacy tasks with greater independence.Pupils can apply the knowledge and skills developed to everyday situations, in preparation for life beyond school.
Semi-Formal
Intent To continue to follow the Twinkl synthetic phonics programme and apply their phonic knowledge and skills across the curriculum.  To read a range of books consistent with their phonics knowledge aloud and with fluency to support their comprehension of texts. To develop pleasure and motivation to read by listening to and discussing a broad range of poetry, non-fiction and narrative texts. To build the skills required when composing texts different purposes including an understanding of punctuation, sentence structures, drafting and editing work. To develop functional literacy skills in order to live their lives as independently as possible.
Implementation A skills-based approach that is in line with the national curriculum.Breadth and balance in English is provided through a range of carefully chosen texts, practical, oral and written activities.Reading and guided reading are prioritised across the school and every child and young person spends time reading and completing reading activities daily.  Pupils are supported to learn to read using Rhino readers reading scheme. Pupils have access to motivating reading materials to encourage reading for pleasure.
Impact To have developed an understanding of the importance of reading both to acquire knowledge and for pleasure/enjoyment.To become confident readers and read for pleasure. We want them to enjoy reading, to spark their interest and imagination through books.To leave school reading and writing with confidence, fluency and understanding, using a range of independent strategies.To prepare our children for the next stage of their lives to enable them to contribute positively to their community.Pupils can apply the knowledge and skills developed to everyday situations, in preparation for adulthood.
