Subject Statement- Mathematics

EYFS
Intent To develop a strong grounding in number so that pupils develop the necessary building blocks to excel mathematically. To count confidently. To develop an understanding of the numbers to 10, the relationships and patterns within those numbers.
Implementation Frequent and varied opportunities to build and apply mathematical understanding.Manipulatives, including Numicon, are used to develop a secure base of mathematical knowledge. Rich opportunities are provided for pupils to develop their spatial reasoning skills across all areas of mathematics including shape, space and measures.
Impact Pupils develop positive attitudes and interests in mathematics.Pupils develop the skills to look for patterns and relationships and spot connections.Pupils will ‘have a go’, communicate to adults and peers about what they notice and not be afraid to make mistakes.
Pre-Formal
Intent To ensure that each pupil has access to a bespoke mathematics curriculum that is closely matched to their EHCP outcomes and IEP targets. To encounter and develop early mathematical skills. To support pupils in developing the necessary skills so that they can access subject-specific learning (Semi-formal Pathway).

Implementation A highly adapted, multi-sensory and skills-based approach. Repeated learning experiences enable pupils to embed and generalise early mathematical skills. Understanding the engagement profile of pupils is used to increase engagement in mathematical learning, through planned purposeful play and sensory experiences.
Semi-Formal
Intent To become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time.To reason mathematically and solve problems. To develop functional mathematical skills in order to live their lives as independently as possible.
Impact Pupils acquire knowledge, skills and understanding in a range of mathematical activities. Pupils gain confidence to become autonomous mathematicians. Pupils can apply the knowledge and skills developed to everyday situations, in preparation for adulthood.
