Curriculum: Intent, Implementation and Impact

EYFS
Intent Pupils will have access to DT opportunities through a range of Early Years areas.Pupils will have a range of opportunities to explore how things work.Pupils will be able to select and use activities and resources, with help when needed.
Implementation Pupils will have opportunities to explore different materials freely, to develop their ideas about how to use them and what to create. Pupils have opportunities to develop their small motor skills so that they can use a range of tools competently, safely and confidently.Pupils will have rich opportunities to develop their creativity and design skills across all areas of design making and evaluating their own work.
Impact To develop positive attitudes and interests in DT.To develop the skills to look for patterns and relationships and spot connections.To ‘have a go’, communicate to adults and peers about what they notice and not be afraid to make mistakes.
Pre-Formal
Intent To ensure that each pupil has access to a bespoke citizenship curriculum that is closely linked to DT and matched to their EHCP outcomes and IEP targets.To encounter and develop early design and technology skills. To support pupils to develop the necessary skills so that they can access subject specific learning (Semi-formal Pathway).
Implementation Explore the sensory qualities of common materials and components and how to use them.Select and use basic tools, equipment and processes to shape and form materials with adult support.Pupils to begin to make simple choices selecting resources to carry out their own plan.
Impact Pupils have experiences which allow early stages of learning in develop knowledge, skills and understanding as part of their everyday activities.Using cross curricula experiences and vast resources to provide a context in planning learning appropriate to the age and needs of students.Maintaining, consolidating, reinforcing and generalising previous learning, as well as introducing new knowledge, skills and understanding.
Semi-Formal
Intent To focus on design problems within a flexible range of contexts and topics that are meaningful to them.To work on personally motivated design tasks where students take ownership of their work and of their own learning.To negotiate individual targets with staff that can be reviewed as required. Pupils have opportunities to work at a personalised level reflecting their individual needs.
Implementation Work with basic tools, equipment, materials and components to make simple products.Explore the qualities of common materials and components and how to use them.Investigate familiar products and think about who will use them and how they work.Suggest outline plans for designing and making and communicate design proposals.Select and use tools, equipment and processes to shape and form materials safely and accurately and finish them appropriately.
Impact To maintain, consolidate, reinforce and generalise previous learning, as well as introducing new knowledge, skills and understanding.To use the programme of study as a resource to provide a context in planning learning appropriate to the age and needs of students.Focusing on a limited number of aspects of the age-related programmes of study.
