Curriculum: Intent, Implementation and Impact

EYFS
Intent To develop confidence to explore different materials and textures freely, so that pupils gain the necessary skills to express their own ideas in an artistic way.  To experiment with colour, design, texture, form and function. To explore and develop the drawing of shapes and lines to include more complexity and detail to represent ideas.  
Implementation Frequent and varied opportunities to explore and extend tactile, sensory and visual forms of art. Rich opportunities are provided for pupils to develop their skills across all areas of art including their physical development of fine motor skills, core muscle strength and coordination.The principles of positive relationships and enabling environments will meet the learning and development needs of each unique child. 
Impact Pupils develop positive attitudes and interests in art.Pupils develop skills, curiosity, and independence expressing their ideas by using different materials. Pupils create collaboratively, share ideas, resources and skills.

Pre-Formal
Intent To ensure that each pupil has access to a bespoke art curriculum that may be linked to their EHCP outcomes and IEP targets.To deliver a curriculum that meets the needs of our pupils who are not yet ready for subject specific learning.To develop pupils’ levels of engagement in art by exploring a variety of different activities to establish what interests and motivates them.
Implementation The Pre-Formal art curriculum is cross-curricular, highly adapted and multi-sensory. A topic-based approach providing stimulating learning experiences using a variety of approaches, materials and equipment to support individualisation and accessibility. Repeated learning experiences to enable pupils to embed and generalise early creative responses and enhance their skills.
Impact Pupils demonstrate increasing engagement and participation in an increased breadth of activities during art lessons.Pupils can complete tasks with greater independence. They show a reduced need for support in producing a piece of work or demonstrate progress in relation to personal targets in a creative way.
Semi-Formal
Intent To enable pupils to engage with art in a positive teaching environment, providing a range of opportunities linked to the National Curriculum. To have opportunities to produce creative work, explore their ideas and record their experiences. To develop proficiency in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques.
Implementation A skills-based approach that is in line with the National Curriculum.A breadth and balance of topic-based activities in art is provided through a range of practical, stimulating learning experiences.For pupils to develop a wide range of art and design techniques, using; colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space.
Impact Pupils acquire knowledge, skills and understanding in a range of artistic concepts and styles. Pupils develop the confidence to express themselves creatively.Pupils develop a keen interest in art and achieve the best possible outcomes.
