Intent To understand the role of people in their families, school and wider community, delivered through Understanding the World. To begin to show an understanding of different people’s roles in the communities that pupils function in.To show some understanding of rules within their classroom and the consequences of not adhering to them.
Implementation Frequent and varied opportunities to experience different people’s roles in the community through role play and with visitors. A range experiences of occupations are offered through role play and immersive play. Extensive opportunities are provided for pupils to develop an understanding of the communities they belong to and British values.
Impact Pupils develop a sense of belonging to the communities that they are a part Pupils can identify key people and their roles in their community.Pupils will have an ability to act and react to familiar rules and expectations of their community.

Intent To ensure that each pupil has access to a bespoke citizenship curriculum that is closely linked to RHSE and matched to their EHCP outcomes and IEP targets.To encounter and develop skills to support pupils to experience and function in their community.To support pupils to develop an understanding of different roles and people in their communities.
Implementation A highly adapted, multi-sensory and skills-based approach. Repeated learning experiences to enable pupils to embed an understanding of people and their roles community.Role play and experiences in the wider community to support the learning from the classroom.Specific and focused enrichment program allowing pupils to experience their community and people roles within it.

Semi-Formal
Intent To develop an understanding of how democratic discussions and decisions are made in pupils’ own communities and in our country. To develop a range of skills to help them understand how rules and laws are made and the consequences if they are broken. To develop functional knowledge of money and how to manage it.To participate in volunteering and taking responsibility in the community that they are citizens of.
Implementation A skills-based approach that is in line with the National Curriculum.A progressive learning experience is provided with an expectation that pupils will move from scenario and role play to demonstrating the skills in the school and local community.Breadth and balance of citizenship is provided through a range of practical, investigative, oral and real-life experiences.
Impact Pupils use skills and knowledge of debate and democracy to help them engage with decision making about their own lives. Pupils understand their options and roles in their community and use this to support their next steps decision making. Pupils can apply the knowledge and skills developed to everyday situations, in preparation for adulthood.
