Curriculum: Intent, Implementation and Impact

EYFS
Intent To engage and inspire pupils to develop a love of music, increase self-confidence, curiosity, collaboration, and a sense of achievement, regardless of pupils’ individual needs. To give opportunities to develop physical skills, expression, imagination and creativity. To provide an additional mode of communication and raise engagement through music and to develop language skills.To encounter activities in singing, listening, composing and performing.
Implementation Using a cross curricular, play-based learning approach, combined with focussed teaching of basic musical skills to encourage progress. Ensuring that lessons are accessible and adapted to all pupils needs. In addition to timetabled lessons, pupils also experience music throughout their school day. This includes songs for transition, self-regulation, sensory stories, TACPAC, dance/movement sessions, enrichment opportunities (including Music Therapy), extra-curricular activities, assemblies and whole-school events.
Impact Pupils develop a love of music, promote active communication to support them physically, academically, socially and emotionally.Pupils demonstrate increasing engagement and participation in musical activities in a breadth of activities.Pupils raise their curiosity, creativity and engagement in singing, listening, composing and performing, in preparation for the next part in their educational journey.
Pre-Formal
Intent To deliver a curriculum that meets the needs of our pupils that raises engagement and attainment. To encounter and begin to develop musicianship skills in singing, listening, composing and performing as well as being exposed to fundamental musical techniques such as pulse/beat, rhythm, pitch, dynamics and tempo.To develop communication skills through music as well as expressing feelings and emotions through movement and music making. To develop creativity, social interaction, cooperation skills, independence, physical skills, confidence and self-esteem.
Implementation Using a highly adapted, multi-sensory and skills-based curriculum supported by Charanga, the Model Music Curriculum and Sounds of Intent Framework. To increase engagement in learning and adult directed activities as informed by the engagement profile to increase initiation, persistence, exploration, anticipation and realisation (IPEAR).Use of a specialist teacher from the local music hub delivering weekly sessions.In addition to timetabled Music lessons, pupils also experience music throughout their school day. Impact Pupils increase engagement and participation, moving from sensory stimulation through to independent music makers.Pupils increase communication skills, creativity, and a means to express themselves.Pupils improve academically, creatively, physically, emotionally and socially. Pupils begin to develop skills in singing, listening, composing and performing, in preparation for moving to a Semi- Formal curriculum or life beyond school.
Semi-Formal
Intent To provide highly adapted learning opportunities based on the National Curriculum that meets the needs of our pupils who are ready for subject specific learning and prepare them for future life. To increase the development of musicianship skills and confidence in singing, listening, composing and performing as well as fundamental musical techniques such as pulse/beat, rhythm, pitch, dynamics and tempo alongside building musical knowledge and attainment.To engage and inspire students to develop a love of music, critical skills, independence, confidence, social skills, creativity, confidence as well as providing a way to express themselves and enhance communication skills.To provide opportunities for the pupils to feel part of and understand their community, history and wider world around them through musical opportunities and enrichment.
